Yigee-yo! An interview with Matisyahu.

Listen to Matis talk, get thrown off by questions, and sing.

Matis talks about being Mathew Miller (yes, still), being Chassidic (or not), music, G-d, connecting, prayer, family, faith, his reggae tongue, and finding a minyan.

Also, cool version of Jerusalem (with beatbox).

Enjoy.

So, who's going to the upcoming shows?

Where can I get tickets?

I don't know 'bout all of them, but the Motzei Shabbos show is sold out. But that's the one you wanna be at! I would suggest showing up and trying to get tickets there, trust me - it works. If you're not that adventurous, then try and check out the other shows.

Whats up with him saying hes NOT Hasidic.
I dont get it/him.

It makes a lot of sense... I am not here to answer for him (when he probably wasn't thinking what I am right now) but know that it makes sense... I am actually impressed that he had the courage to say that, because he now expects a controversy over that statement... But I'm with him all the way.

Dovid, wanna share your take? Why are you "with him"?

Although I also think there's something I admire about it, I think I have to think about it a bit more, listen to it again...

I don't think Matis tries to make controversial statements.

I still don't understand why it makes sense.
Care to explain?
I mean,if he considers himself lubavitch amongst us,Why the falsity to the world?
Unless the situation is vv...in which hes lying to us.

If ur gonna say its b/c he doesnt want to represent chassidim in this manner and that hes his own person, well,in theory that makes sense...but in actuality it makes matters waaay more complicating.
SOO??

I think that he slips more often then he should. Discretion isn't one of his more noted skills. Remember that whole "Jewish music sucks" fiasco on crownheights.info?

ya i didn't really get what he was saying...like we have to try to see where hasidism needs to go from here or something...? And did he ever say he was hasidic before--why the change now?

I love Matisyahu- and the mission he is on. I love what I have heard until now, and look forward to his upcoming music releases. I admire his talent and was always rooting for his strength, in keeping his Chassidic attire- even when performing for such diverse crowds. But that seems to have changed. First came the Puma sneakers, then the cap, and other stylish- "not too chassidic" garb. Don't get me wrong. I love it. It suits him well. But am I the only one noticing, how maybe this is part of the "influence" the media, or the atmosphere he has been placing himslef in- is having on him?

It's interesting how, when someone is in the public eye, we think it gives us a certain ownership - the key to discussing and analyzing his moves, his speech, his clothing.

And maybe it is indeed like that.

But it's really so simple, no?

Matis is a Jew. To me, he is a talented, true, and praiseworthy artist who, in many ways, seems to have tapped into the essence of what it means to be a Jew, a Chassid, a Chabadnik.

While the outside appearance of things does often play a role, we never know. And furthermore, why take it so far? Get down to it. Music comes from a person's root - and Matisyahu's music takes away all questions.

But, really, I hate talking about this. He's my neighbor (actually, quite literally), just another Lubavitcher, giving it out, figuring it out, growing, expanding, etc.

A little deeper, and I see a pumping heart, the G-dly soul, Moshiach, the future of the Jewish people, the Rebbe...

It's big stuff.

Bigger than Puma.

I might agree that he doesn't gain points with articulateness when it comes to speaking, but I definitely see a certain inwardness, modesty, and truthfullness in him that shines and leaves me proud.

I noticed that he is who he is and he possibly wants to say that he's just a Jew who's constantly growing and exploring- and definetely breathes and sings, loves and lives by chassidus. A baalas teshuva once reacted: "I never BECAME baalas teshuva- I'm still getting there- always working and getting over the challenges." Matisyahu probably identifies himself as chabad and feels close with the Rebbe, etc. but is still unsure he wants to identify himself loudly with that title. (all this is my guess)... It is kind of funny to be so unclear and sort of inconsistent with his answers- but I guess it's hard when everyone's looking and listening and analyzing. I really love when he's up there full chabad garb and making brachos on stage. It's inspiring how and when he quotes tanya and torah and gets every head bopper to say "I want moshiach now!!!" These are my thoughts, and don't really effect what he does/wears/thinks/is.

yes, but when you are in the media and so many people are watching you and looking up to you as an example you have to be very careful with even what you wear...

i think he made the comment about not being chasidic perhaps to point out that basically he is a JEW, that's it, we seem to get so caught up in labeling ourselves and others. when people see my husband with his long beard they always ask him if he is a lubavitcher and he says no man, i'm a jew. let's not get ourselves caught up in labels and hatrims and jacket styles, we are all here to serve the Ribono Shel Olam and that's it

it's ok for him to say he's not chasidic, but not when all his music is based on chasidus...
